Churches and monasteries

During your visit to Zakynthos do not forget to visit our most important churches and monasteries:

  • The Church of Agios Dionysios where the island’s patron saint’s remains lie intact till today,
  • The Agios Nikolaos tou Molou church, located at the port, where Agios Dionysios presided (15th century),
  • The Agios Giorgios Filikon church at the top of a hill in the Bohali area, where the members of the Filiki Eteria (Association of Friends) and revolutionary Greek heroes Kolokotronis and Nikitaras were sworn in,
  • The Agia Mavra church, located in the village of Maharado, with the miraculous icon, celebrated on May 3 (16th century),
  • The Monastery of Panagia Anafonitria with the miraculous icon of Panagia Vrefokratoussa (Virgin Holder of the Newborn) that was brought to the monastery from Constantinople (15th century),
  • The Monastery of Agios Georgios Krimnon, located north-west of Zakynthos in the mountainous area of Volimes, famous for its rare paintings and icons of the 16th century,
  • The Monastery of Prodromos (St. Ioannis Baptist), close to the village of Katastari (16th century).
